Gambia Entry Requirements

Gambia Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
The Gambia greets you with disarming ease. Your plane dips over the milky-brown Gambia River, skims the palms, and settles onto the runway at Banjul International Airport. The door folds open and humid, salt-laced air rolls in, carrying charcoal smoke from street grills and the faint perfume of tropical blossoms. Immigration officers in crisp khaki work at a measured pace, stamping passports with a solid rubber thud. From document check to baggage claim to customs, most travelers clear the hall in under 45 minutes, free to breathe in the first real taste of Gambia: warm, earthy, scented with palm-lined beaches and peanut-sauce dinners waiting only minutes away. Before you leave home, confirm your passport is valid for at least six months past your planned exit. Entry rules are refreshingly simple: most Commonwealth, ECOWAS, and EU citizens walk in visa-free, while everyone else can secure an e-Visa within five working days. Yellow-fever vaccination cards are inspected at a health desk just past immigration. Keep yours ready so you can glide past the small table where medical staff scan documents beneath humming fluorescent lights.

Arrival Process

Touching down at Banjul International Airport feels like landing inside a single-story garden, coconut palms lean over the short runway and the sweet smell of frangipani drifts through open doorways.

1
Immigration Desk
Hand your passport and yellow-fever card to the officer. Answer one or two simple questions about your stay. The stamp appears with a soft click and a faint scent of fresh ink.
2
Baggage Claim
Two carousels serve all flights. The concrete floor vibrates as bags slide down the metal chute. Listen for the thud of suitcases and the occasional clang of duty-free liquor boxes.
3
Customs Channel
Choose the green lane if you have nothing to declare. An officer may wave you through or request a quick bag scan beneath the humming fluorescent arches.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for six months beyond date of entry and contain at least one blank visa page.
Yellow Fever Certificate
Required for travelers arriving from or transiting through endemic countries. Checked at health desk before immigration.
Return or onward ticket
Printed copy or e-ticket on phone. Officers sometimes ask for proof of exit within the visa-free period.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have $20, $30 in crisp US dollars ready for the airport taxi. Drivers prefer cash to cards.
Keep your yellow-fever card in your passport so you can present both in one smooth motion.
If arriving overland from Senegal, carry small euro or dalasi notes for the modest border crossing fee.
