Gambia Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and The Gambia Immigration Department before traveling, as entry requirements may change.
The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, welcomes international visitors with a relatively straightforward entry process. The country operates a liberal visa policy, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to citizens of most countries, making it an accessible West African destination. Banjul International Airport (BJL) serves as the main point of entry, though travelers can also enter via land borders with Senegal. Upon arrival, travelers will go through immigration control where they must present valid travel documents, proof of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds for their stay. The immigration process is generally efficient, though wait times can vary depending on flight arrivals. All visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date. Yellow fever vaccination certification is mandatory for travelers arriving from or transiting through countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. The Gambia Tourism Authority works to facilitate smooth entry for tourists, as tourism is a vital sector of the economy. Most visitors receive a tourist entry stamp valid for varying periods depending on nationality. It's essential to verify current entry requirements before travel, as policies can change, and to ensure all documentation is in order to avoid complications at the border.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

The Gambia offers visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival to citizens of most countries for tourism purposes. The length of stay permitted varies by nationality, and all visitors must meet standard entry requirements including valid passports and yellow fever vaccination certificates where applicable.

Very few nationalities require pre-approved visas. If no Gambian embassy exists in your country, contact the nearest one or apply through the Ministry of Interior. It's recommended to apply at least 3-4 weeks before intended travel.

Arrival Process

The entry process into The Gambia is straightforward for most travelers. Upon arrival at Banjul International Airport or land border crossings, you'll proceed through immigration and customs control. Having all required documents organized and readily accessible will expedite the process.

1
Disembarkation and Health Screening
After leaving the aircraft or vehicle, you may undergo health screening including temperature checks. Yellow fever vaccination certificates are checked at this stage if arriving from endemic areas.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, completed arrival card (distributed on flights or available at the airport), return/onward ticket, and accommodation details. Immigration officers may ask about the purpose and duration of your visit. Your passport will be stamped with entry authorization.
3
Baggage Claim
Collect your checked luggage from the baggage carousel. Report any missing or damaged luggage to airline representatives immediately.
4
Customs Declaration
Pass through customs control where you may need to declare items exceeding duty-free allowances or restricted goods. Officers may inspect luggage. Use the green channel (nothing to declare) or red channel (goods to declare) as appropriate.
5
Exit to Arrivals Hall
After clearing customs, you'll enter the public arrivals area where you can arrange transportation, exchange currency, or meet your host/tour operator.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from The Gambia. Should have at least 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Required for all travelers aged 9 months and older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. Vaccination must be at least 10 days old. This is strictly enforced.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof of departure from The Gambia (flight, bus, or ferry booking). Immigration may refuse entry without evidence of onward travel plans.
Proof of Accommodation
Hotel reservation, invitation letter from host, or address where you'll be staying. Immigration officers may request this information.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Evidence you can support yourself during your stay (cash, credit cards, bank statements, or traveler's checks). Rarely requested but advisable to have available.
Arrival Card
Completed immigration arrival/embarkation card with personal details, passport information, and local address. Distributed on international flights or available at immigration.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Arrive with patience - during peak tourist season (November-April), immigration queues can be lengthy. Stay calm and have documents ready.
Keep your yellow fever vaccination certificate easily accessible, separate from other documents, as it's checked before immigration.
Have printed copies of your hotel reservations and return flight tickets, even if you have electronic versions. Internet access may be limited.
Dress modestly and respectfully when arriving. The Gambia is a predominantly Muslim country, and first impressions matter at immigration.
Exchange a small amount of currency at the airport for immediate expenses like taxis or tips, though rates may be better in the city.
Be polite and cooperative with immigration and customs officials. Answer questions honestly and directly.
Take note of the date stamped in your passport - this indicates when you must leave. Overstaying can result in fines and complications.
Keep your passport and entry documents secure throughout your stay - you'll need them for departure and may need to show them at checkpoints.

Customs & Duty-Free

The Gambia Customs and Excise Department regulates the import and export of goods. Travelers are entitled to duty-free allowances for personal items, but must declare items exceeding these limits or any restricted goods. Customs officers may inspect luggage, and failing to declare dutiable goods can result in fines or confiscation.

Alcohol
1 liter of spirits or wine
For travelers aged 18 years and above only. Must be for personal consumption. Commercial quantities are prohibited without proper import licenses.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco
For travelers aged 18 years and above. Must be for personal use. Larger quantities may be subject to duty.
Currency
No limit on foreign currency, but amounts exceeding $10,000 USD equivalent must be declared
Declaration required on arrival and departure for amounts over $10,000 USD. Gambian Dalasi (GMD) may not be imported or exported in excess of GMD 200. Failure to declare can result in confiscation.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and gifts up to a reasonable value (approximately $100 USD)
Goods must be for personal use or as gifts, not for commercial purposes. New items in original packaging may attract scrutiny. Electronics like phones, cameras, and laptops for personal use are generally allowed.
Perfume
Reasonable quantities for personal use (typically 50ml perfume and 250ml eau de toilette)
Must be in quantities consistent with personal use during your stay.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics - strictly prohibited with severe penalties including long prison sentences
  • Firearms and ammunition - without proper authorization and import permits from security authorities
  • Counterfeit goods and pirated materials - including fake designer items and pirated media
  • Pornographic materials - prohibited under Gambian law
  • Endangered species products - items made from protected wildlife (ivory, certain animal skins, shells) under CITES regulations
  • Hazardous materials - explosives, flammable substances, toxic chemicals without proper permits
  • Counterfeit currency - possession of fake money is a serious criminal offense

Restricted Items

  • Prescription medications - bring only what's needed for your stay with original packaging and doctor's prescription. Controlled substances require special authorization.
  • Professional equipment - cameras, drones, and professional video equipment may require permits, especially for commercial use. Register valuable items to avoid export issues.
  • Plants and plant products - require phytosanitary certificates to prevent introduction of pests and diseases
  • Animals and animal products - require veterinary health certificates and import permits from the Department of Livestock Services
  • Radio transmitters and communication equipment - may require authorization from telecommunications authorities
  • Weapons and hunting equipment - require special permits from police and security services

Health Requirements

The Gambia has specific health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for most travelers, and other vaccinations are strongly recommended for your protection.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required for all travelers aged 9 months and older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, or who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with yellow fever risk. Vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. Certificate must be presented at entry or travelers may be vaccinated on the spot (at cost) or denied entry.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to potential exposure through food or water
  • Typhoid - Recommended, especially if visiting rural areas or eating outside major hotels and restaurants
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
  • Malaria prophylaxis - The Gambia is a malaria-endemic country. Antimalarial medication is strongly recommended for all travelers
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis - Ensure boosters are current
  • Polio - Booster recommended if not received in adulthood
  • Meningitis - Recommended during dry season (December-June) when risk is higher
  • Rabies - Consider if you'll be working with animals or spending extended time in rural areas

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended but not required for entry. Medical facilities in The Gambia are limited, and serious conditions may require evacuation to Senegal or Europe. Ensure your insurance covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers.

Current Health Requirements: Health requirements can change rapidly, particularly regarding COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Check current requirements with The Gambia Ministry of Health or your country's travel health advisory 2-3 weeks before departure and again shortly before travel. Some countries may require COVID-19 vaccination certificates or negative test results - verify the latest protocols. Register with your embassy upon arrival for health and safety updates during your stay.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (cannot be included on parent's passport). For children under 18 traveling without both parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) authorizing the child to travel. This should include parent contact information, travel dates, and destinations. If one parent has sole custody, carry legal documentation. Birth certificates may be requested to prove relationship. Children are subject to the same yellow fever vaccination requirements (if 9 months or older). Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and immigration.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets requires advance planning. You must obtain an import permit from the Department of Livestock Services, Ministry of Agriculture, at least 30 days before travel. Required documents include: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel stating the animal is healthy and free from infectious diseases, and proof of other vaccinations (distemper, parvovirus for dogs; panleukopenia for cats). Pets may be quarantined upon arrival if documentation is incomplete. Microchipping is recommended. Contact the Department of Livestock Services well in advance: +220 422 8291. Airlines have specific requirements for pet transport - confirm with your carrier.

Extended Stays

If you wish to stay beyond your initial authorized period, apply for an extension at the Gambia Immigration Department in Banjul before your current authorization expires. Bring your passport, two passport-sized photos, proof of sufficient funds (bank statements), proof of accommodation, return ticket (or proof you can purchase one), and extension fee (varies by length). Extensions are typically granted for 30-90 days. Overstaying without authorization results in fines (approximately GMD 500-1000 per day) and potential deportation or entry bans. For long-term stays (work, study, residence), you'll need appropriate visas/permits applied for through the Ministry of Interior. Business visas and work permits require employer sponsorship and additional documentation.

Business Travelers

Business visitors can usually enter on tourist visas for short business trips (meetings, conferences, negotiations). For formal employment or extended business activities, obtain a business visa or work permit. Required documents include invitation letter from Gambian company/organization, letter from your employer detailing purpose and duration, proof of business registration, and relevant qualifications. Work permits require approval from the Department of Immigration and Labor Department. Processing takes 2-4 weeks. Engaging in unauthorized employment is illegal and can result in deportation.

Students and Volunteers

Students attending educational institutions in The Gambia need a student visa/permit. Apply through the institution, which will facilitate the process with immigration authorities. Required documents include acceptance letter, proof of tuition payment, proof of accommodation, and financial support evidence. Volunteers working with NGOs or charitable organizations need volunteer permits. The hosting organization typically handles the application. Carry documentation from your organization at all times. Both student and volunteer permits require regular renewals and reporting to immigration authorities.

Dual Nationals

If you hold Gambian citizenship plus another nationality, you must enter and exit The Gambia using your Gambian passport. This is mandatory under Gambian law. Dual nationals cannot enter on a foreign passport to avoid this requirement. Contact the Gambian embassy if you need to renew your Gambian passport before travel. Some countries do not recognize dual nationality - check both countries' policies to avoid complications.
